The Story: The Case of the July Jackpot
The July Jackpot Magical Golden Spoon – a spoon that has the ability to conjure any ice cream flavor imaginable – has been stolen from The Frosty Scoops Ice Cream Parlor! Students solve math problems to unlock clues, track down the culprit who trashed the ice cream parlor, and recover the prize. They will be begging to do more math as they solve clues to track down the thief.
Set the scene with the optional video hook for the Case of the July Jackpot on your whiteboard or screen, then wrap up the case with the ending video. Students solve the math worksheets to unlock clues and eliminate possibilities after each clue to crack the case.
Math Skills Required to Unlock Clues
There are five clues to crack to solve the mystery:
- Clue 1: Multi-Digit Addition & Subtraction (with regrouping)
- Clue 2: Rounding Larger Numbers
- Clue 3: Multi-Digit Multiplication
- Clue 4: Long Division (No remainders)
- Clue 5: Add & Subtract Fractions with LIKE Denominators
Students must use critical thinking skills to work out what each clue is telling them to eliminate from the list of possibilities.

4th Grade Summer Math Review: Who It Is For
This edition is written for 4th Grade students and works in July, in summer school, or in summer packets to prevent the dreaded summer slide. Use it for:
- Summer packets
- July math centers
- Summer school
- A fun whole-class review
- Sub tubs
Pacing and Timing: Time to complete will vary anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours or more. It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format, and how difficult they find the math skills covered in the clues. Please check the skills above to help determine suitability for your class.
I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, move on to the next clue, either within the same lesson or in the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, “We must learn something new before attempting the next clue.”
How This Math Mystery Escape Room Works
- Set the Scene: Students read the mystery story or watch the included animated video hook to kick off the investigation.
- Crack the Code: Students complete five math worksheets to unlock vital clues.
- Eliminate Suspects: Each solved clue helps them eliminate suspects from their list until only the correct thief remains!
- Celebrate: Once the final answer is revealed, watch the animated ending video to see how the story concludes.
Because of the “Crack the Code” format, this activity is completely self-checking. If the code makes sense, the math is correct, allowing you to verify student progress at a glance.

Easy Grade-Level Differentiation
The Case of the July Jackpot is available in 6 grade editions. The story is the same; the math is different, so you can match each group to its level:
- 1st Grade Edition (cannot be clue-swapped with the other grades)
- 2nd Grade Edition
- 3rd Grade Edition
- 5th Grade Edition
- 6th Grade Edition
The 2nd-6th Grade editions can “clue swap” between editions to differentiate within one class. Grade 1 Math Mysteries are formatted for early learners and cannot be clue-swapped with the other grade versions. Read more: How to differentiate using Math Mysteries.
