How to Differentiate With Math Mysteries

The single biggest challenge in any classroom? The “range.”

You have students who finish the math work in 10 minutes and are bored. You have students who are still struggling with the first problem. And you have everyone in between.

The traditional answer is “differentiated instruction,” which usually means you, the teacher, have to prep 3 different activities, run 3 different centers, and basically triple your workload.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Math Mysteries are specifically designed to solve this problem. You can run one activity that engages your entire mixed-ability class. Here are the 3 easiest and most powerful ways to differentiate with math mysteries.

Method 1: The “Clue Swap” (Your Secret Weapon)

 

Most of my mysteries (like the “Super Bad Superhero”) are available across multiple grade levels, but they all share the same story, the same suspects, and the same final solution.

This allows you to “clue swap.”

 

Here’s how it works:

Imagine you’re teaching a 4th-grade class. You’re all doing the “Super Bad Superhero” mystery.

  • Most of your class is ready for 4th-grade math (long division, multi-step problems, etc.).
  • But you have one group of students who still really struggles with long division.
  • The Problem: You can’t give them “Clue 3” (the long division page) because they’ll get frustrated and shut down.
  • The Solution: You go to the 3rd Grade version of “Super Bad Superhero” and print only “Clue 3” (which might be multiplication facts).
  • You give this 3rd-grade page to that group. They solve it, and it reveals the exact same clue as the 4th-grade version (e.g., “The culprit does not have a red cape”).

The result? That group is still working on grade-level-appropriate math, but they are fully included in the class activity. They get to participate, eliminate the same suspect, and help solve the exact same case as their friends.

No one feels “left behind” with a “baby” worksheet. That’s true, seamless differentiation.

(Note: The “Clue Swap” method works perfectly for Grades 2-6, as they all share the same structure. Kindergarten and 1st Grade have their own unique, age-appropriate formats.)

If Clue 3 from the 2nd grade edition is too easy for some of your advanced students, swap it out with the more challenging clue 3 equivalent in the 3rd grade edition.

For this to work, remember:

  • The mystery story must be the same
  • The clue number being swapped must be the same e.g. clue 3 for clue 3 within the Case of the Litterbug.

Method 2: The “Targeted Case” Method

This is the more traditional (but still effective) approach. Instead of having the whole class solve one mystery, you can use mysteries as the ultimate math center activity.

Because my library is so large, you can easily assign different “cases” based on skill level.

Here’s how it works:

 

Let’s say your 3rd-grade unit is on Addition & Subtraction.

All three groups are engaged, excited, and solving a fun puzzle. But you are secretly targeting the exact math skill they each need to practice.

 

Method 3: The “Grouping” Method (Perfect for K-1)

For Kindergarten and 1st Grade, differentiation looks a little different. The math is more foundational, so the focus is on support, not content.

  • Kindergarten: Our K-level mysteries are in a simple “5 W’s” format (Who, What, Where, When, Why). The best way to differentiate is by grouping.
    • Whole Group: Introduce the case on the smartboard.
    • Independent: Have advanced students try to solve the “Who” and “What” pages on their own.
    • Teacher-Led Small Group: Work with your struggling learners in a small group to solve the clues together, counting and sounding out the words as a team.
  • 1st Grade: These packets have a smaller suspect list to be less overwhelming.
    • Partner Work: Have most students work with a partner to solve the clues.
    • Independent: Give the packet to your high-flyers as a “must-do” challenge.
    • Teacher-Led: Use the packet as your main small-group instruction for the day.
