Description

Easter Math Mystery 2nd Grade: The Case of the Rotten Eggs is a no-prep Easter math review for 2nd Grade students. ‘The Case of the Rotten Eggs’ is a high-engagement activity that makes reviewing telling time and fractions far more exciting than a standard worksheet.

The Story: The Case of the Rotten Eggs

Slimewort is on the loose, trying to ruin Easter by turning all the eggs of Mathhattan rotten! Math detectives need to use their math skills to unlock the clues, locate Slimewort, and save Easter.

Set the scene with the optional video hook for the Case of the Rotten Eggs on your whiteboard or screen, then wrap up the case with the ending video. Students solve the math worksheets to unlock clues and eliminate possibilities after each clue to crack the case.

Math Skills Required to Unlock Clues

There are five clues to crack to solve the mystery:

  • Clue 1: Telling Time (O’clock, half-past, quarter-past, quarter-to)
  • Clue 2: Making 50 (Fill in the missing number using addition/subtraction)
  • Clue 3: Fractions (Identifying shaded areas)
  • Clue 4: Balancing Addition Equations (1-digit and 2-digit numbers)
  • Clue 5: Addition (Adding four 1-digit numbers)

Students must use critical thinking skills to work out what each clue is telling them to eliminate from the list of possibilities.

What is Included in this Math Mystery?

  • Optional video hook to introduce the case (watch it here).
  • Ending video to wrap up the case.
  • Printable PDF case file: the mystery story, suspect list, and five clue worksheets.
  • Google Slides digital version: 100% paperless. Assign it in Google Classroom. (Students must be in edit mode to type.)

Easter Math Mystery 2nd Grade: Who It Is For

This edition is written for 2nd Grade students and works in the weeks leading up to Easter (or any time in spring). Use it for:

  • A fun spiral review
  • Math centers or stations
  • Homework or enrichment
  • Your “early finisher” tub
  • A lifesaver for your sub-tub!

Pacing and Timing: Time to complete will vary anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours or more. It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format, and how difficult they find the math skills covered in the clues. Please check the skills above to help determine suitability for your class.

I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, move on to the next clue, either within the same lesson or in the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, “We must learn something new before attempting the next clue.”

FAQ

What skills does this mystery cover?

This is a comprehensive review. Students will practice reading analog clocks (to the quarter hour), identifying fractions, and solving balancing equations.

Is this better than a normal worksheet?

Absolutely. Standard Easter math worksheets can be dry. This activity adds a narrative, a suspect list, and video hooks to keep students motivated to solve every problem.

How long does a Math Mystery usually take to complete?

Most of my mysteries are designed to take approximately 40-60 minutes. This can vary depending on whether students work individually or in pairs. Many teachers also love using them as a “Friday Fun” activity or breaking them up over two shorter sessions.

Is there any prep involved?

I know how busy you are, so I keep it “Print & Go.” There is no cutting, laminating, or complex setup required. Just print the clue pages and the opening story, and you are ready to start the investigation!

Is an answer key included?

Yes. A complete answer key is included, along with printable awards.

Can I use this with other grades?

Yes. The Case of the Rotten Eggs comes in 5 grade editions with the same story and different math, so you can match the edition to your students.
