Valentine's Day in the classroom (physical or virtual) doesn’t have to be all about writing lovey-dovey letters and risking someone being left out. But it is a good opportunity for students to engage in some educational fun while learning about what it means to be kind to one another. In this post, you will find some awesome activities that you can do with your kids this Valentine's Day!
1. “From St Valentine” Writing Task:
Valentine’s Day activities don’t have to be all mushy and lovey for kids, but it is a good opportunity to teach them about the importance of being kind and caring towards one another. Put all the students’ names in a jar, then have each student randomly select a name. Ask the students to write a short letter about what they admire or like about the other student. Collect the cards and display them in the classroom. This is also a good opportunity for students to practice their sentence and/or paragraph structuring. Depending on the grade level of the class, providing a template for a letter or demonstrating past examples can be helpful if any student is unsure of what to write.
2. Valentines Day Hangman Free Online Game –
Students must think about their vocabulary and spelling to guess the Valentine’s themed words. This is an excellent digital classroom themed activity for kids to do at home or useful brain break for the students during the day in the classroom.
3. Valentine’s Day Free Multiplication Puzzle Game
Another excellent opportunity for students to practice their multiplication skills and sticking to the theme of Valentines Day. Students must piece together the love themed image by dragging the appropriate tile to the correct answer. The great thing about this online game is that students can focus their timetables between 1-12 where they can practice all or select a few they want to focus on. Students also can opt for hard, normal or easy. So this activity is suitable for every student no matter what level they are at in their times tables!
4. Valentine's Day Themed 'What's the Math Question?"
These Valentine's Day 'What's the question?' cards are great to help your students create their own math word problems. Differentiate this card set by setting the challenge to make word problems involving either multiplication, division, negative numbers for higher grades OR keep it to basic addition and subtraction for lower grades.
HOW TO USE Each student receives a card and must create a math word problem that will result to the information given on that card. After the creating part, students swap their Valentine's Day math word problems with other students. 5. Create a paper plate Love Monster:
You must go check out the blog below ‘GluedtmyCrafts.com’. There is an excellent tutorial for making paper plate Love Monster’s as an afternoon craft activity. The activity is inspired by picture book “Love Monster” by Rachel Bright and can be paired with the activity to get the students in the mood. Better yet have the student create their own version of a Love Monster and write their own short story. Depending on the amount of time you have in the class this can become an extended activity that can lead students to not only develop their creative arts skills but their creative writing as well!
