Think back to your days at school. What lessons stick in your mind? It most likely isn’t the lesson where you read from a textbook. More than likely enough, it is something fun or practical that sticks in your mind. Maybe it was with your favourite teacher as they were funny or explained things very clearly. Or maybe it is a memory of something that was taught in a different way. When planning lessons, as the saying goes, variety is the spice of life. Follow these tips to help ensure your pupils remember your lessons.
Tip #1 – Be creative
Pupils will visit up to ten teachers in a day, five times a week, learning different concepts and subject content. To make yours stand out, and for them to remember what they’ve learnt, you may have to think outside the box. There is plenty of ideas out there, should you hit a mental block. But mixing it up in the classroom will allow your students to remember your lesson. Tip #2 – Have a learning intention or objective Make sure there is a point to your lesson. Sometimes, lessons may drift in a certain direction, which can be beneficial to help some learners. However, sometimes, they drift too far from your original plan and so, having an objective allows you to reign the chat in and get back on track. Tip #3 Use a variety of learning styles Using a variety of the three main learning styles in a lesson will appeal to all learners. Kinaesthetic learners absorb information by doing, using a handson approach; visual pupils will learn from images, videos, written text or infographics while auditory learners will learn best when they hear the content through a variety of mediums. A mixture of these learning styles will help keep your lesson moving while appealing to all learners. Tip #4 Organise An effective lesson makes sure that the lesson is organised, and more importantly, you are organised. You know to recap from the previous lesson at the start, you know to have a solid introduction, an active middle, and a solid conclusion. You also know what equipment to use and have it all in the classroom with you. You know what the homework task is, and you have considered all pupils with Special Needs or Gifted and Talented who need stretched and challenged. By spending time organising your lesson plan, an effective lesson can be assured. Tip #5 – Go with the flow After all my rules, sometimes you need to step back from your plan and realise that it might not work that day. While you have an excellent lesson plan, with great teaching styles ready that worked amazingly the previous week, today, your techniques seem to fall on deaf ears. It’s time to reconsider your plan. You may have to use quick thinking here, which comes with experience, but reconsider what isn’t working and change to meet your children’s needs. You forcing them down a path to learn will not work. Change it up, add some fun, and go for it. Hopefully these tips will help with lesson planning. It is very important to be fluid when it comes to teaching. Some days the lesson plan can be followed along perfectly, other days, the pupils may not be feeling themselves and so, it is vital you adapt to their wants and needs. This will ensure an effective lesson which they will remember.
