A reading corner is perfect for students to relax with a good book. It can be a tranquil oasis within a busy classroom or a cozy spot at home where kids can unwind with their favorite stories. If you're thinking of creating a reading corner in your space, here are some tips to get you started.
1. Pick a comforting and inviting spot. The reading corner should be a place where students feel comfortable spending time. It should be away from high-traffic areas like doorways and play spaces and have plenty of soft materials like pillows and blankets; we like to add some cuddly reading buddies too! Pick some comfy seating options too; we like to use big floor cushions that we purchased from Adairs.
2. Make sure there's ample lighting. Proper lighting is critical for any reading space. In addition to overhead lighting, consider adding a lamp or two to create a warm and inviting glow; otherwise, pick a nice bright window to set up the space. If lamps or windows aren't an option, you could add some torches.
3. Stock up on plenty of books, but rotate! Kids will be more likely to spend time in the reading corner if there is a variety. While we have a massive book collection on our bookshelf, I tend to rotate setting up some books to choose from in our corner – the kids find it less overwhelming to decide when there are fewer books. In addition, they are more likely to sit and read in the reading corner when it isn't cluttered. Rotate the book choices every couple of days. As you can see our bookshelf is a bit messy, but that's because we use it so much! Even my toddler loves to use this space.
4. Encourage kids to take care of the space. The reading corner should be a special place that's well-cared for by everyone who uses it. Encourage kids to put away books and keep the space neat so others can enjoy it too.
A reading corner is a beautiful addition to any classroom or home, and it's easier than you might think to create one! Just pick a cozy spot, grab some exciting books, ensure plenty of lighting, and encourage kids to take care of the space. With these tips, you'll have an inviting reading corner in no time!
