Setting Math Mystery Expectations in the Classroom

Using Math Mysteries in the classroom is a fun way to mix things up when consolidating and/or reviewing math skills. However, for some classrooms, it can be a little bit challenging to keep excited students contained from sharing 'classified' information. To prevent clue or mystery solution 'spills' happening, I recommend setting up some Math Mystery expectations for your class. Read on to find out my suggestions for rules and a free poster download to use. 

The expectations outlined below are a MUST to keep Math Mystery sessions running smoothly. 
Either:

• Write these on the board as in the image below (you may want to add some of your own) 
• OR print the free download poster, laminate and hang somewhere in the classroom. 

You may wish to add some of your own rules to this list. But, discussing the following expectations are a must when starting out with Math Mysteries:

• Keep clues and answers a secret (keep them to yourself and hidden from others).
• ALL math questions must be completed (even if you can guess the rest of the missing letters in the clue)
• Never give up until the case is solved (if it is getting tough, stop and think about what the hard part is, get help if needed, and try to get past the hurdle.)
• Read the clues carefully (some clues are tricky, and if not thought about carefully, it can sometimes lead to incorrect eliminating.)
