This Thanksgiving Junior Reading Mystery, The Greedy Guest, is a fun way to incorporate reading comprehension, spelling, and the start of learning the art of deductive reasoning. Calling all student detectives to help the Mad Hatter figure out who ate all of the roast turkey at his Thanksgiving dinner party!
The Case of the Greedy Guest is one of the mysteries in my 'Junior Reading Mystery - Once Upon a Crime' series. It is structured and packaged differently from my more challenging Once Upon a Crime Reading Mysteries. The mysteries in this range are easier and target 1st Grade and 2nd Grade students (please note that the level of difficulty for your students may vary depending on reading abilities).

What's included in this Junior Reading Mystery resource packet?
For the first time in this new series, I'm offering the printable worksheet combined with a digital graphic game in the one resource pack. This is because the questions/answers are almost the same in both versions. You can choose which method of delivery you prefer to use.
>>> The Printable Worksheets Option
There are five reading comprehension pages in total. Each page contains a small reading section and then some comprehension questions or a spelling puzzle. The prep is simple; print, copy and solve! Samples of the pages are provided in the preview section. (The QR code sample in the preview needs to be updated and will be unavailable for a little while.)
>>> The Digital Game option
The digital game option contains lots of colorful graphics and can be used on any device; all required is a steady Internet connection.
>> Please <click here> to try a sample clue from Broken Beanstalk free to see if these types of games work on your device/computer. The answers are presented in a multiple-choice fashion and/or 'find the image' type of puzzle.
Sharing Options for the Game Link:
- two URL's (one short, one long) to copy and paste
- QR Code
- Google slide link with the game link embedded on the slide
>>> Video Hook
There's an optional video hook provided to set the stage to engage! It's an ideal way to announce to your students that it's mystery time!

- Vocabulary: One page includes word clues that children will match with pictures, helping them learn new words and their meanings.
- Spelling: The final clue page provides an opportunity for some spelling practice on some words.
- Guided Deductive Reasoning: As they answer the comprehension questions, they will be guided as to which character to eliminate at the end of each clue.
