The Goal of the Mystery
The primary objective of this activity is to encourage reading while helping students identify nouns, verbs, and adjectives in a fun and engaging way.

• Students will practice reading comprehension and grammar skills by identifying nouns, verbs, and adjectives as they work through the clues.
• They must highlight evidence in the reading passages to support their answers.
• The discovery format involves filling in missing letters to unlock clues in the original PDF file. For a more challenging option, the B-Edition Structure (found in the alternate folder) allows you to set up the mystery like an escape room, requiring full answers instead of missing letters.

Each clue challenges students to think critically and use deductive reasoning to narrow down their list of suspects. The final suspect standing is the culprit responsible for the Knight’s Tail!

This original story places your ‘student detective’ at the center of the action, making them the star throughout the activity.

Preparation
This is a print-and-solve worksheet activity (or digital worksheets in Google Slides). Everything you need is included in the download, including the reading passages. Simply print (or open the Google Slides option), copy for your students, and set up the optional video hook for viewing at the start.

The video hook is designed to spark curiosity and make students think, “What’s going on?”—encouraging them to dive into the reading.

Implementation Suggestions

• Depending on your students’ reading abilities, the difficulty of this activity may vary. To keep everyone on pace, consider reading the passages together as a class, then completing the activities to unlock clues.
• For independent work, set a timer for reading, then allow time for students to answer questions and re-read as needed.
• If students attempt the activity without reading, instruct them to highlight evidence in the text to show where they found their answers.

Differentiation Options

A Note About the Story
As the story progresses, students will discover that the Knight is unkind and that the tail was placed as a lesson to teach him not to be mean or insulting to others. It’s a bit like Pinocchio’s lesson about lying, but in this case, it’s about kindness and respect.
