Description

How It Works
Students will highlight evidence in the reading passages to support their answers. The activity follows a discovery format, where students fill in missing letters to unlock clues. For differentiation, a B-Edition Structure is included, which requires full answers and teacher verification. Word banks are also provided to simplify the word puzzles if needed.

To solve the mystery, students must read carefully to complete missing letters in words, sentences, and statements, or answer questions and vocabulary puzzles. Each clue challenges students to think critically and use deductive reasoning to eliminate suspects from their list. The final suspect standing is the culprit!
(Don’t worry—the Groundhog is safe, just trapped asleep in his burrow.)

Preparation
This is a print-and-solve activity, or you can use the updated version with Google Slides/PPT, which includes editable text boxes for answers. If using the B-Edition, you may need additional prep to set up clue cards in envelopes or lockboxes for a discovery-style experience. All necessary reading passages are included in the download—just print, copy for your students, and set up the optional video hook to kick off the activity. The video hook is designed to spark curiosity and encourage students to dive into the reading.

Implementation Suggestions

• Depending on reading abilities, the activity’s difficulty may vary. To keep everyone on pace, consider reading the passages together as a class, then completing the activities to unlock clues.
• Use the B-Edition to increase difficulty or remove the missing letter format. The optional word bank can help simplify vocabulary puzzles.
• For independent work, set a timer for reading, then allow time for students to answer questions and re-read as needed.
• If students attempt the activity without reading, instruct them to highlight evidence in the text to show where they found their answers.
