Description

How It Works:
Students will highlight evidence in the reading passages to support their answers. The activity follows a discovery format, where students fill in missing letters to unlock clues.

Differentiation Options:

• A B-Edition Structure is included for flexibility. This version removes the missing letter format and requires full answers, which must be checked by the teacher.
• Word Banks are provided to simplify the word puzzles for students who need extra support.

To solve the mystery, students must read carefully to complete missing letters in words, sentences, and statements, or answer vocabulary puzzles. Each clue challenges them to think critically and use deductive reasoning to eliminate suspects. The last suspect standing is the culprit!

Engaging Storyline:
This original story casts your students as the star detectives, solving the mystery of who turned the teachers into toads. All reading passages are included, and an optional video hook is provided to set the stage and spark curiosity.

This is a print-and-solve activity—everything you need is included in the download. Simply print the materials, make copies for your students, and set up the optional video hook to kick off the activity. The video is designed to intrigue students and encourage them to dive into the reading.

Implementation Suggestions:

• For younger or less confident readers, consider reading the passages together as a class before tackling the activities.
• For independent work, set a timer for reading and allow students time to answer questions and re-read as needed.

What Are “Once Upon a Crime” Reading Mysteries?
These engaging activities combine reading, comprehension, and critical thinking with a fun mystery-solving format. In this resource, there are five clues to crack, each designed to target key skills:

• Reading & Comprehension
• Spelling
• Vocabulary & Definitions
• Nouns & Adjectives

• Critical Thinking
• Optional Writing (on the mystery declaration sheet)

After solving all five clues, students can complete an optional mystery declaration sheet to name the culprit, explain their reasoning, and outline the clues they used.
