Here are some effective tips to help you teach inference skills in your classroom.
Begin by explaining the concept of inference. Inference is about reading between the lines – it is the process of drawing conclusions based on evidence and reasoning. It’s like being a detective, using clues from the text and their own knowledge to figure out what the author is trying to convey indirectly.
Visual aids such as photographs or comic strips can be a great starting point for teaching inference. Ask students what they can infer from the image, prompting them to justify their answers with what they see. This can be a fun and interactive way of introducing inferences before moving onto text-based examples.
Modeling is a powerful teaching strategy. Show students how you make inferences when you read. Think aloud as you go through a passage, explaining how you use clues from the text and your own background knowledge to make inferences. This will provide students with a clear example of the thought process involved in making inferences.
Choose texts that lend themselves well to making inferences. Like any other skill, making inferences gets easier with practice. Provide plenty of opportunities for students to practice inferring with a variety of texts – stories, non-fiction articles, poems, etc. Gradually increase the complexity of the texts as students’ inferential skills improve.
Ask questions that encourage students to infer, such as “Why do you think the character did that?” or “What can you guess about the setting based on the descriptions?” This encourages students to delve deeper into the text and hone their inference skills.
Guide students to draw on their own experiences and knowledge when making inferences. This not only makes the process more personal but also helps students understand that their own perspectives and experiences can help them comprehend new information.
