Tips for Using Google Classroom

Google Classroom along with some great tutorial videos whose accounts you can follow for regular updates.

Assign Classwork/Project via the “Create an Assignment” tab on the right of the screen:
Teachers can assign instructions, a due date, and attach files for their students to complete and ‘turn in’. This may be assigned to the whole class or individually depending on how you may wish to implement differentiation.  When attaching a Drive file such as a document, slides, or sheets, you can choose the following options based on how you would like your students to complete the work:

Allow students to view only – this will allow all students to read the attached file but will not be able to edit.

Allow students to edit the file – this will allow all students to edit the same file. This may be useful if you wish to create a collaborative activity.

Make a copy of the file for each student – this will ensure that each student gets an individual copy to edit and do their individual working in. The student’s name will automatically be added to the document title. When the student ‘turns in’ the assignment you will be able to see the file labelled with the student’s name. The student also has the option to attach any other images or documents that may be part of the assignment.

Creating short answer or multiple-choice questions.
This can be another useful way for assessing your student’s understanding. Creating a question on Google Classroom will give you the option to post the question to one or more classes on a set date.
There will be different options for how you want your students to engage with the questions you ask in class. If it is a graded test then you can choose to not allow other students to see their peers’ responses. Or if you want to take a more collaborative approach to classwork, you can begin a discussion forum to the question that will allow students to respond to one another’s ideas. See the image below and check out the Google Support link for more information on creating multiple choice items, grading and attaching additional files to your question(s).

Create and Add topics to your Classwork page:
This can be a useful way to organise assignments, quizzes and class materials etc under your class’s topics or unit modules. You can create a topic in the class by first clicking ‘Classwork’ then ‘Create’ and you will find the tab ‘Topic’. When assigning tasks you will have the option to choose for it to pop up under the relevant topic.  For more information on creating topics click the below Google support link.
