As educators, we often think of “creativity” as something reserved for art or drama. However, fostering a creative mindset is essential for critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration in every subject.
Here are 6 brief points and strategies for encouraging creativity in the classroom that you can start using today.
Many teachers tend to have templates and items pre-cut before an art lesson. While this “levels the playing field,” it can actually stifle creativity. Try giving students the raw supplies (like those needed to make a basket) and let them figure it out. This forces them to use prior knowledge and think critically about construction and design.
It is crucial to allow students to feel safe and accepted when sharing their creative ideas. A “no-judgment zone” during brainstorming sessions ensures that the quietest students feel comfortable taking risks.
Make it clear that mistakes are okay! When students aren’t worried about “getting it wrong,” they are much more likely to attempt creative risks and find unique solutions to problems.
Set up a small space in the classroom for independent or group exploration. Stock it with craft materials, paper, pencils, glue, and scissors. Having a “creative outlet” available for early finishers or specific center times allows students to build and create freely.
Give students opportunities to view the art, traditions, and beauty of different cultures. This provides a rich “inspiration bank” that students can draw from when working on their own creative projects.
Working in teams helps foster creativity as students “feed” off each other’s thoughts. I recently assigned my students to create a commercial for “edible paper pizza.” The results were hilarious and showed how group dynamics can push creative boundaries!
