Let’s be honest: August is a whirlwind. As teachers, we are running on coffee and adrenaline, trying to establish routines, remember names, and set the tone for the entire school year. But what about our students?
Coming off the freedom of summer break, the transition back to the classroom can be tough. Kids are tired, they miss sleeping in, and the back-to-school “grumbles” can hit hard. When students are already feeling a little resistant to being back at their desks, handing them a stack of standard, boring review worksheets is a quick way to lose their attention completely.
To beat the back-to-school blues, we need to get them actively engaged. That is exactly why I created The Case of the Awful August!
When you hand a student a standard worksheet, they just see a list of chores. But when you hand them a August Math Mystery, they become detectives. Suddenly, they aren’t just “doing math”; they are on a high-stakes mission!
In this beginning-of-the-year mystery, a sneaky new villain known as the Grumble Gremlin has invaded Mathhattan. He is using his high-tech vacuum backpack to suck up the power of everyone’s whining and complaining, turning the vibrant city into a dull, dreary grey. To save the city, students must crack the math clues, use deductive reasoning, and eliminate incorrect potions to find the one true antidote.
It changes the entire dynamic of your math block. Instead of groaning about review work, they will be begging to finish the next math page so they can figure out the clue!
I love starting this activity by playing the animated video hook for the whole class. It instantly grabs their attention, sets the stage for the mystery, and gets them completely invested in the storyline before they even pick up a pencil.

August is a tricky transition month academically. If we jump straight into complex, brand-new grade-level concepts on day one, we risk overwhelming our students and crushing their confidence.
That is why I designed the Awful August math mystery to act as a bridge. Instead of testing new material, each grade-level pack intentionally reviews the heavy-hitting foundational skills from the previous school year.
For example: The 6th Grade Edition focuses heavily on 5th-grade decimals, long division, and volume.
The 1st Grade Edition focuses purely on end-of-Kindergarten addition, subtraction, and number comparison.
This strategic review allows your students to experience a huge “win” right out of the gate. They get to start the year feeling successful and confident, and you get a stealthy, low-stress baseline assessment of what they retained over the summer!
One of my absolute favorite things about this specific mystery is the SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) message built right into the storyline.
The villain in this august math mystery—the Grumble Gremlin—literally feeds on negative energy, whining, and complaining. The more the citizens of Mathhattan grumble, the stronger he gets! This creates an incredibly natural, fun opportunity to have a class discussion about classroom culture.
After you finish the mystery and reveal the positive, uplifting antidote, you can talk with your students about:
How complaining affects the mood of the whole classroom (feeding our own classroom “gremlins”).
Strategies for handling back-to-school fatigue in a positive way.
How to build a supportive, grumble-free community this year.
