During the first day back at school, establishing a set of classroom rules is key to a smooth running and productive classroom.
Keep rules simple and to the minimum.
State the rules positively (try and refrain from using the word don’t). For example: Instead of ‘Don’t call out’ you could write this rule as, ‘Raise your hand and wait your turn to speak.’
Keep the classroom rules visible. For example a nice large poster somewhere at the front of the classroom.
Discuss the consequences for breaking the rules. The class must agree that the consequences are fair and accept them.
Ensure that your rules cover social behavior expectations and not just school work.
Regularly revisit your rules as a class and update them when necessary.
I recommend having a list of rules you wish to set in mind before school begins. However, I’ve found it best to use questioning techniques to get the students to say the rules you want to hear themselves.
