Here's another cool math trick to teach your kids! Get them to try it with lots of different numbers to sneak in some extra math practice, whilst amazing them that the answer is always 5! If the answer isn't 5, then a calculation mistake was made and so needs to be redone. You could get your students to show the math on a piece of paper to check. A fun and challenging activity that you could give your students is to get them to try and explain how this trick works. Example of using this trick: Step 1: I choose 100 Step 2: Double it = 200 Step 3: Add 10 = 210 Step 4: Halve it = 105 Step 5: 105 - (100) = 5

I love math tricks and so do my students! They are a great way to get kids thinking about numbers and operations whilst adding a bit of 'magic' to the process. Below is a fantastic math trick you could try with your kids that will get them multiplying, adding, doubling, dividing and subtracting . . . and if done right the answer will always be 15 no matter what number was chosen in step 1!
I like to use these at the start of a math lesson for a quick math mental warm up, or if there are a few precious minutes to spare that need to be filled with something educational. I've included an example of the process underneath the image below. Example: Step 1: I'm thinking 100 Step 2: 100 X 3 = 300 Step 3: 300 + 45 = 345 Step 4: Double 345 = 690 Step 5: 690/6 = 115 Step 6: 115 - 100 = 15!
Here is another great math trick that I recently found and would be great to teach your students or kids. The fun part is that they can choose ANY number at the start and, if they perform the calculations correctly, the answer will always be 8! Give it a go and try it out with a few different numbers to begin with.
Step 1: Come up with any number. Step 2: Subtract 1 from this number. Step 3: Multiply your answer with the number 3. Step 4: Add 12 to the number. Step 5: Divide the result by 3. Step 6: Add another 5 to your answer in Step 5. Step 7: Subtract the first number you came up with at the start (Step 1) from the number you resulted in at the end of Step 6. The Answer will be Number 8! |
